MMJotW: Brown Sugar

This D’Angelo song is a classic soul jam that always sounds good. D’Angelo announced some new tour dates recently and he will be making a stop in Brooklyn. D’Angelo hasn’t been on the scene for awhile, but I have heard that he is still smooth live. I’m still debating if I should go see him…$60…what do you think? Will it be worth it?

MMJotW: This Time

Melanie Fiona has been underrated in my mind. Yes, she won a bunch of awards but I rarely saw her in the spotlight. I saw her open for Alicia Keys a few years ago and she was fabulous live, almost better than her recordings. I am hoping that she goes on tour again so I can see her perform live again. Here is one of her latest songs that was released in 2012, “This TIme”. Enjoy!

MMJotW: Dancing on my Own

hello…hello! This week’s MM Jam of the Week is Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own”. I just recently started watching “Girls” and I love it! Heard this song on one of the episodes from season 1 and now I can’t stop listening to it. Enjoy! Anyone else into “Girls”?

MMJotW: PJ Morton “Only One”

One of my favorite past times is finding new artists and exploring their music. Today, I happened upon PJ Morton, who used to be the keyboardist and a vocalist for Maroon 5. His video caught my eye because he did a collaboration with Stevie Wonder and you know anything with Stevie is golden.  After researching a bit more, I found out that PJ Morton has done collaborations with some of my favorites artists like Jazmine Sullivan, Kendrick Lamar, Tweet and Lil’ Wayne (not my fave).  I’m adding him to my list of artists to see live! Hope you enjoy his song with Stevie, “Only One.”

MMJotW: Hang Me Up to Dry

About a year ago, I attended the Ting Tings concert at Webster Hall in NYC. It was one of my first concerts in NY and I had just started my exploration of the concert venues in NY, which I am still continuing to do. While waiting for the Ting Tings to perform, “Hang Me Up to Dry” by the Cold War Kids played and I loved it immediately. I like the feistiness and sexiness of the lyrics and melody of the song.

I am still hoping to catch the Cold War Kids in concert soon.  Let me know if you hear of any concert murmurings around the NY area. After hearing this song, I have found many of their other songs that I quite enjoy. Hope you do too!

MMJotW & The Great Gatsby

I am beyond thrilled for the new Baz Luhrmann film, The Great Gatsby, to be released in theatres on May 10th. If you have not seen a trailer yet, please check out the video below and get ready for sensory overload. i can keep watching these trailers over and over again.

The film will be in 3D and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Isla Fisher. Here are the multiple reasons why I am so super anxious to see this film:

1) Baz Luhrmann is the Director – Baz is known for his great Red Curtain Trilogy, which included Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, and Moulin Rouge. Let me tell ya, I loved all of these films, especially the bright splashes of color, use of shadows/light and random quick moments of silliness.

2) The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a quick-read in which many of us have forgotten since reading it in high school. I recently re-read the book and I quite enjoyed it. Make sure you give it another go before seeing the film!

3) The costumes – Catherine Martin collaborated with Miuccia Prada to create the costumes for this film, which focuses on high fashion of the 1920s. Lots of crystals, flowing chiffon, rhinestones, tassles and those fabulously sharp bob hairdos.

4) Leonardo DiCaprio. I haven’t found a project with Leonardo DiCaprio that I haven’t liked yet (including Growing Pains).

5) And of course, to coincide with the MMJotW, the music! The soundtrack to this film is so good, which was overseen by Jay-Z! The film is definitely a delight for your eyes and ears! The soundtrack features Lana del Rey, Andre 3000, Florence + the Machine, Jay-Z, Frank Ocean, Beyonce, Kanye West, Emeli Sande, The Bryan Ferry Orchestra, The XX, Gotye, Nero, Sia and much more.  A couple of my faves are Florence + The Machine’s “Over the Love” and the Filter remix of “Happy Together.”

Check out clips of the rest of the songs on the soundtrack here.

Hope you enjoy and let me know if you’re excited for May 10th too!

MMJotW: Blurred Lines

This week’s MMJotW ” is inspired by feeling good and grooving to music like nobody’s watching. I loved this song the moment I heard it especially since I’ve always been a fan of Robin Thicke and Pharrell. This song reminds me of Marvin Gaye’s jam “Got To Give It Up,” which is an awesome feel-good song and an all-time classic jam to groove to.  Enjoy the jam and feel good this week! Hey hey hey!

MMJotW: Hope this song gets stuck in your head ALL day…

oh t-pain…

This week’s MMJotW is dedicated to my BFF, who I know has a strong love for this song. This week’s jam is “Low” by Flo-Rida, featuring T-Pain. This is a very special event for the Melinda Mae blog since I will never ever feature another T-Pain song on the MMJotW, so BFF, I hope you appreciate this.

Every time I hear this song, I am always reminded of my BFF and his classy dance moves to this song. And when most people hear the line “Apple bottoms jeans…”, they can likely finish the rest of the hook and then it happens… the song is in your brain for the rest of the day. Damn those boots with the fur! Enjoy this ultimate club jam from 2008 and hope you sing it a few times throughout the day.

MMJotW: The Civil Wars “Tip of My Tongue”

I love the way that The Civil Wars sound. Their sound is very smooth and soothing and the blend of their voices is beautiful. They remind me a lot of of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova of the Swell Season and the movie, “Once”. I feel like they could be perfectly cast for the musical, “Once,” since their sound and voices are so similar to that of the original actors especially this song, “To Whom It May Concern.” Some of their music has also been featured on the TV show, “Nashville”.  The Civil Wars’ album “Barton Hollow” has a lot of really amazing and underrated songs so please listen if you like this song.

I was excited to potentially catch them live but unfortunately, they decided to break apart this past November and cancelled all of their tour dates. =(  Hopefully they will get back together and continue to make music. There is something very genuine and touching about their music. You’ll have to hear for yourself…”Tip of My Tongue.”

MMJotW: & It Was You

The cold weather is still hanging around but the good news is that the days are longer now. With the weather and a bad case of the Mondays providing a damper on today, I decided to pick a song for you all to dance and groove to. This week’s MMJotW is How To Dress Well’s “& It Was You.” Here is the official video, which I would not recommend watching. The song is much better enjoyed with eyes closed, body swaying and fingers snapping. Enjoy!
